I love BRAZIL, and I don't think the ending is so unhappy. 
It's like Danny DeVito says in THE GOOD NIGHT: "sometimes I wish I could just hit the sack and never wake up. if your favourite song never ended, or your best book never closed, if the emotions from these things would just go on and on, who wouldnt wanna stay…
