I think it just finally evened out. Season two had a lot of press and promotion surrounding it. Plus, there was the heavily hyped Britney Spears episode as the second episode of the season. Only hardcore fans were watching it back then, hardcore fans only watch it now (or at least people who still care enough).

I think he just phoned it in these two episodes. His performance was sub-par.
