McCay and Watterson
Hell Yes. McCay was a killer illustrator/designer.
These are the strips that prompted Bill Watterson to push for more freedom with his Sunday Calvin and Hobbes strips. He saw what people like McCay and George Herriman were able to accomplish and wanted more.
It really bums me out to see no one is

I thought this episode was pretty great, but the SNL parody bit of it seemed like ground they've already covered with their "Jim and Derrick" MTV-style episode. And that episode took the idea of dumbing down their show for mass audiences even further, to the point that that episode was just as depressing as funny.
