There's usually plenty of decent folks (male and female) around to fight off the crazy around here, but I don't know what's happening right now.

The defenses of leering here are rather… disproportionately passionate. It's off-putting.
They do a great version of Born in the USA though:
I would also love to hear details about how ending tenure saves money. The only possible way I can think of is that long-termers (with higher salaries earned through long years of service and promotion) could be fired for no reason other than to be replaced with younger, less-experienced (and therefore cheaper)…
It was a really good movie.*
I think one thing I've learned in the course of this election is the extent to which moderate, Boomerish Republicans are out of touch with how extreme their party has gotten. They're not on the internet much. They don't know what Breitbart is. They don't like Trump, maybe didn't vote for him, but they still otherwise…
It certainly gets his vocal supporters to dig in (no idea how to actually get them to dig out, since they are an intellectually lazy bunch who don't believe in facts or experts), but there's a chance it gets through to some of his silent supporters, and/or the more traditional Republicans who don't like Trump or the…

Yes, I'm sure the average couple gets a lot of skeptical eyebrows when they introduce themselves as Bob Ono and Susan Lennon ;)
Yeah, I was using hipsterish as a purely descriptive term (if that's possible). As a linguist, I appreciate the morphological creativity involved in the process.
There was also that teacher's younger brother with epilepsy who just wandered off into the night literally and figuratively and was never seen again.
I took my spouse's last name. We found it more convenient to have the same one, especially since we (and our kids) go back and forth between two countries on a semi-regular basis. Plus it gave me the bonus of losing my very uniquely Googlable name for one that is less uniquely Googlable, so I got a little more privacy…
I can't help but wonder if there's some sort of denominational effect on the more religious-y sounding ones. Like (hypothetically) "entered eternal rest" might be a particularly Catholicky phrasing, "was called home" might be Presbyteriany, anything involving straight-up "The Lord" more evangelical, etc. And then…
That doesn't mean that the shows themselves don't have misogynistic aspects to them though. The argument isn't that the viewers are all misogynists, but that the shows reflect (to some extent) the kind of internalized/institutionalized misogyny that runs through society.
"and there’s something infectious about, say, the Muppets dancing around that knocks playfully against the limitations of puppetry."
I think part of the confusion is that the A- is only for the second ep. The first got a B- but they posted the higher grade next to the link on the main page. You have to uncollapse the little bar at the top of the page to see the B-. It's a confusing system.
I had no idea who he was (don't follow sports) but for some reason I found the open hilarious. Maybe the randomness plus the jaded New Yorkers bit which I have found humorous ever since the first Ninja Turtles movie.
I think I must have some sort of extra-strong willing suspension of disbelief for sitcom shenanigans because when I see a character like Jake do something silly like obsess over an old dirty towel I think "Aha. Here is an exaggeration of slovenliness for humorous effect" not "I am deeply concerned about this…
It has given me some comfort in these exceptionally-bad political times to have a place where I know there will be reasonable people discussing the situation on an intellectual level, and where I might learn something new and/or get a fresh perspective on things. There aren't a lot of places like that out there on the…
Well said. I'd just like to say ditto for us girls too.
