To be fair, I was in an area studies department where there were lots of people with dual appointments in other departments. So I may have randomly hit the psychoanalyst jackpot with a set of courses each headed by the one person in each of Comp Lit, English, Asian Studies, Theater, etc. with such inclinations. If I

Yeah, I think that resistance goes along with the whole "death-of-the-author" vein. Which, as I say about many veins of scholorship, I'm happy that other people are out there doing somewhere, but it's just not my thing. I always found the historical-context part of literature to be one of the most interesting parts.

Well, the interview was a lot less bleak ;)

Hehe… believe it or not this was not just one professor but every single professor that I had in that department. All of them were literature people, not "official" psychoanalysts, so I guess they were just following some sort of trend in criticism? I honestly still don't know.

There is hope. I did go back for my PhD in Linguistics, and I did like it. Depending on how theoretical you get, you might fall into the people-obscuring-at-each-other-all-day pit, but I did work that straddled experimental and theoretical and I liked it just fine. People are genuinely interested in solving problems,

You're lucky. My kid decided that in fact this would be one of the movies that he would fixate on and watch on repeat. Putting all the critical issues aside, it is an INTENSE movie to have to watch again and again.

Honestly, as someone who has actually given birth once or twice, I also find the idea that any of the characters on this show are successful doctors to be somewhat incredulous. Remember that horrible childbirth episode? Where nobody thought to consider "epidural" as the middle ground between elective C-section and the

Aw, Nick. Consistently "Depression-era garbageman."

I had a similar experience with my Master's degree. For me, the moment that killed it was the one where I realized just how little of what we were doing was based on "fact" or "data." We had spent three weeks in a class discussing something about gender in Antigone, mostly with me sitting there being lost. Eventually

Oh jeez, early season 1, where I spent a lot of time asking "Who is this person who looks like Winston and is named Winston but who is somehow the (non-becatted) voice of reason?"

I think it is an excellent next-to-final draft of a season of television. The great stuff is all in there, but it needed just a little more editing. And the editing issues most likely related to pioneering the Netflix format. Overall, good try guys. E for effort.

The neat thing about The Quest is that up until the point when they find NYC in the Arctic, all the stuff that they encounter is weird but explanable. Why is there a random Japanese man in the middle of nowhere? Leftover WWII pilot. Why is there a random troll-man guarding the bridge? It's just Adam, that loveable

I do think the finale-finale is also a legitimately good episode. Would it be missed if they had ended it with The Quest? No. But I still think it was a good episode given the fact that they didn't.

Yeah, I can make it until the end of 7, but I mentally change Scully's hospital announcement at the end to "It's just a touch of anemia. I took an iron supplement and I should be fine."

7 has that fairy-tale one, right? That was… not great.

Oooh, I'll have to be on the lookout.

Well, I'll be the one to step to the bat for the last season of Northern Exposure. I agree that there were some clunkers towards the end, and the Chris/Maggie thing needed waaaaay more set-up if it was going to work (I legitimately thought I'd missed an episode about those two somewhere).

I couldn't even get to fairy-lovin' part because I completely lost interest in the second book around page 200 of "Our Hero Is Super Rad At Playing the [Guitar]*" (*insert appropriate medieval instrument here… was it a lute? I don't even remember I was so bored)

OLD NEW GIRL SPOILERS AHOY

Yeah, I definitely give Scrubs until 8. It's not as consistently good by 8 but it's not bad enough to skip, and has some good ones in there (like the finale).
