Oh that comment was so out of line - that whole special was really weird.  Watching the guests have to name their favorite Doctor with Peter Davison right there was awkward, to say the least.

Once the announcement was made, I started wondering how many of my junior high aged students will still be watching with an older Doctor.

If you mean by getting the audience all teary-eyed at the gift-giving scene, to be turned to sobbing once Mr. Hooper walks in, then yes, they did provide a distraction.
