Seasons 6 and 7 were the best, bro. Knots Landing is where it's at though. That is a genuinely good nighttime soap - like Twin Peaks.

These kind of character-driven shows barely do well, unless they have a gimmick that catches on with a mainstream audience - who then, watch the show for something it's not, and criticise it.
