I think there are a variety of reasons that the stories of these games tend to be grandiose (save the world)

I haven't played Mass Effect but Dragon's Age was a major disappointment for me.

I was somewhat resistant to the Grimes episode when it first came out because it was notably darker than any episode up into the point. I still recognized that it was a good episode, though, and warmed up to it by my next viewing.
