The Narrator Returns

I was reminded throughout this of the American Express billboard with Fonda/Terry Valentine on it that's in a few seconds of The Limey.

I have no doubt that played at least some role in it, but I'm a bit tired of people treating this like it's a 1:1 comparison.

Also, one of them behaved like a lech and a creep while the other actually raped someone and led them to commit suicide.

Even the praise out of Sundance had the edge of "Great story, it's the rest that's a problem".

From what I've seen,

Even though last year had his best cinematography since The Tree of Life.

I honestly would've liked either, but more Shannon on the red carpet is a great thing.

Mica Levi
Yorgos Lanthimos
Mike Mills
Rodrigo Prieto

It's bullshit that neither Amy Adams nor Annette Bening got into Actress, but I'm so happy for Ruth Negga and especially Isabelle Huppert. And the Michael Shannon nom is really awesome.

Hey, it's another nom for Thomas Newman, at least.

I have seen literally none of them, but I am amped for Toni Erdmann.

Maybe even a reprise of this.

Get fucking Meryl Streep out of there, put in Adams or Annette Bening.

Ruth Negga and Isabelle Huppert got noms, Amy Adams was inexplicably shut out.

And The Lobster and 20th Century Women got Original Screenplay!!!!!!

Michael Shannon got an Oscar nom for Nocturnal Animals!!!

I've heard that he's done well for a few shows, including that and Please Like Me, I'm just basing my impressions off his error-filled, not particularly enlightening Knick reviews and his pretty widely-reviled ones for The Shield.

By "AVC reviewers", you mean "notorious fuck-up and misinterpreter of shows he's assigned to review (and, to be fair, quite delightful Twitter personality) Brandon Nowalk".

Elle: Well, goddamn. An incendiary black comedy/character study like only a man with seemingly no decency could make. I love Emma Stone and her performance in La La Land, but Team Huppert all the way.
