Dhalgren is probably my favorite books of all time (my avclub posting name is lifted straight from the book!), so went slightly stir crazy when I saw that NYMag mention of a stage production, geeked out and bought tickets to the first performance last night.

I saw the restored Lola Montes at Film Forum last year and was pretty underwhelmed. It's clearly a gorgeous and ambitious film with a lot of thought and artistry behind it, but an hour in or so I just kept on wondering when the hell it would end. I'm usually right in line with AV Club reviews, but I think you're being overtly harsh on this one. The plot wasn't revelatory, but it wasn't some slapdash "earnest, conventional, issue-oriented mediocrity."
