Eh, I've always seen Siegfried as more of a dumbass than a dick. Still goes with your point, though.

@avclub-eac75edc18b8546c46893fe4b75ab995:disqus I think they're going based on pageviews rather than comments as their reason for covering those. A lot of people read the recaps but don't comment (I did this until just a few days ago, in fact).

I'm a huge Wagner fan, especially the Ring, but I also love Italian, French, Russian, English, etc. opera and thought that statement was ridiculous. I really can't stand the idea of German opera in opposition to everything else. Why can't we all just get along and admit that opera in general is pretty fucking awesome?

I agree in general but I think if you're going to have one opera to listen to, a Wagnerian opera is a good one. The orchestral music is just as interesting as what is going on onstage (this is why Wagner was my gateway drug to opera-in-general, I was an orchestra kid in high school), and his use of leitmotifs means

Um, no, you can take this us-vs.-them shit and shove it. The majority of us classical music and opera fans who are NOT elitist snobs and manage to enjoy Wagner AND regular television shows are really sick of having to answer for your vocal minority who thinks that everyone who doesn't share your cultural interests

Yeah, I found a lot of the set to be annoyingly distracting, but it's still weird that the reviewer didn't really mention the quality of the performance at all except for a brief mention of Bryn Terfel's performance as Wotan.

Well nobody can be Alex Ross like Alex Ross, and the A.V. Club's audience isn't QUITE like the New Yorker's - but still, you're right, I was waiting and waiting and waiting for the reviewer to talk about the performances beyond just that one instance of "dude, Wotan was good" and got nothing. Everyone knows the sets

I hope they really go further with this love interest at NYADA, not because he seems like a particularly interesting character but because it's so obvious to anyone who is older than 18 that Rachel/Finn are one of those couples who work in the bubble of high school but out in the broader world, they don't have much in

I'm going to have to disagree with you about Voigt, I thought she was great (er, is - since I'm watching Goetterdaemmerung right now). Maybe I'm just used to hearing lots of older Bruennhildes. I think the fact that she put so much into the acting side of things did a lot to credit her to me, especially with her

Yeah, I kept thinking, for all the expense and technical stuff that went into creating that set, I've seen far more interesting Rings from places with half the budget of the Met.
