Music in the 90s required effort and investment.  You had to read the right fanzines and get the right import singles.  You couldn't just bring up Ebay to get your limited edition tour t-shirt or napster the fuck out of entire discographies.

It's self-congratulatory navelgazing.  When mere fan adulation isn't enough and you've got to physically insert yourself into the article as a narrative cog in of itself.
