Nuts, I'm wrong. According to the Kubrick Archives book, The Shining, FMJ and EWS were all shot full-frame (1.33:1) but projected at 1.85:1. So I have no idea why I thought EWS was projected at 1.66. Maybe I stretched my eyes too high that day.

Oh dear. Barry Lyndon telling the story of his exploits to his son at what will be his deathbed is not only very good acting on the part of Ryan O'Neal, but just may very well be the most emotionally touching scene in any Kubrick film.

I think the theatrical release was projected at 1.66:1, rather than the usual 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. So a full-frame transfer wouldn't be that far off from a 1.66:1 mask.
