what i find interesting are bands where there are two lead singers who sound a lot alike: The Beatles, The Cars, Big Star, etc.. at first, you might not realize its two different people. but once you pick up on it, and you start paying attention, you can distinguish the two. and then, you might realize that one singer

IMO, the best rapping voice is Q-Tip: little shouting and very musical, smooth, swinging, tough enough when needed, but always smart, clever and confident.

IMO, it's because singers like Carey or Dion are all about showing off their vocal technique: all that melisma and wailing is the same kind of wanking we'd get from hot-shot guitar players in the 70s and 80s. and these days, it's probably 50% autotune anyway, so what's the point?

as decades of singing competition shows have proved, good singers are rare. no matter what the material, you need someone who is technically competent, has the ability to sell a song (which is a kind of acting, IMO), and who has sufficient charisma - and that is a tough combo to find. many people have one of those
