I think the reason that John succeeds so often is his refusal to treat teenagers different than any other characters. He's never striving to sound "teen-y" (Looking at you, Diablo Cody) and respects all of his teenage characters and doesn't trivialize their struggles.

Was it just me or did AHS kind of stumble into this weird Gatsbian territory with Constance talking about a lack of open land and the destruction of history.
