Not true. In California, The Smiths are also associated with Mexican-Americans, especially from the lower classes and Spanish speaking backgrounds.
What is weird about America's reaction to The Smiths is that they ended up being associated with the Chicano culture, especially in Southern California. Weird.

I do not know, in the UK, it was a game-changer. At one point, every other British band was a Strokes clone.
To me, they sound like a poppier version of Television.
Before the nineties, if a science fiction writer wrote about a TMZ-like entity in one of their stories, it would have been seen as being a poorly though out, far fetched idea by the majority of the readers.
