Mike, Crichton was one of my favorite pulp writers. What you call his perennial problem was what kept me reading: his techie environments existed only as an engine for his often ingenious plotting and (usually) sharply drawn characters. In-depth analysis of them would have derailed the whole enterprise.

She's probably too old now, but Rene Russo did this kind of role perfectly in the Thomas Crown remake. That being said, I'd like to see what Eva Green could have done in this.
