It was mentioned in an earlier episode that Tywin's wife died giving birth to Tyrion. Even if Tyrion's dwarfism wasn't initially apparent, that alone would lead Tywin to be less than loving to his last offspring.

I think ``A Hole in the World'' and ``Shells'' are among `Angel's' best episodes, maybe even among the best episodes in the whole Whedonverse. The scenes with Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker are heartbreaking and brilliant all at  once.
