I don't know, @avclub-cf50b28ef624912ff106c57ca9be41dc:disqus - I truly hated Scooby-Doo growing up. We didn't have a tv but when I saw it at a friend's house I really thought it must be some kind of torture. BUT - I am intrigued…

"Scooby-Doo". Yeah…but I loved it.

Oh yeah - I was totally surprised at how much I flat-out loved it. I thought it looked terrible, but I was dating a guy who wanted to see it and sometimes you just have to do things you don't want to do. It was awesome.

I kind of made myself enjoy Planet of the Apes as I was watching it, since I'd paid for it and even stood in line for it (do movies ever have lines anymore?). After it was over I kept involuntarily thinking about it and man, it was bad. What a load of crap.

I saw Purple Rain for the first time about 4 years ago. I'd avoided Prince through most of the '80s, since he weirded me out (yeah, I was an alienated dumbass with questionable taste). I've since become a big fan of his, and Purple Rain just lived on those performance sequences, which were nothing but fantastic.

@openid-111502:disqus Ridley Scott is the other director who is meticulous about his films I was thinking of, though after seeing Prometheus again today I'm not quite so sure…the images were carefully planned but the screenplay, not so much…

OK, so where I grew up (the midwest, Iowa mostly) washing your hair in the kitchen sink was perfectly normal. So much so that the scene near the opening of Halloween II, where the young woman is doing this, seemed perfectly unremarkable at the time, but jarring when viewed later. In the commentary for "A Dirty Shame",

Some of my friends are indulgent enough to let me change the aspect ratio setting on their tvs to match whatever dvd we've gotten together to watch, bless their hearts. I have learned to grin and bear it when necessary. I've been watching the BBC "The Singing Detective" with a friend and, while the image was altered

I swear to god, I saw what you wrote as "barely-intestined", and the image in my mind was immediate and vivid.

I'm sure you've seen "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman" and "Lola Montes", but just in case you haven't.

If it wasn't when it was new, it was nearly new - 20 years ago or so or more. That is what it looked like though. The show was weird and bad enough without it.
