One example is that Gingrich doesn't have much popular support at all, but when individual donors can give his PAC millions of dollars (one guy giving $5m is the highest I'm aware of) it gives him parity in ad buys.Maybe not rendering democracy an illusion, but certainly distorting the influence of fringe candidates.
