You're allowed to change things. It's generally accepted even by the author that the film is better than the book.

I have a bone to pick with this film. It clearly states in the start of the Purge announcement that government officials who are Class Ten are exempt from being potential targets of the Purge. If Elizabeth Mitchell's Senator (especially one running for president) doesn't qualify, then who does?

Depends how you define 'decent'. I thought the second season was also terrible but in such a bizarre way that I couldn't miss watching a single episode as soon as it was broadcast. As hate watches go, it was the best. Lucifer comes very close, though.
