but they're amazing at picking out the best seats. Have you ever tried to scope out a seat with old people around? No, because their feet hurt, their tired, and they've been thinking about sitting down longer than you've been awake.

Streetcar Named Desire is better. Brando is hotter. The story is crazier. It is and all-around better film.

One of the saddest Adult realization moments I've ever had was when I learned that Christopher Plummer didn't do his own singing for Sound of Music. That was just heartbreaking because I love me some Capt. Von Trapp

At the very least James Cromwell should have won for playing Farmer Daggit. The "If I had Words" scene is forever on my "favorite music moments in film" list.

My problem with Titanic is not that it won, it's that the film won against L. A. Confidential.

I'm pretty sure he made Hansel and Gretel a few years ago, it sat around forever, and they released it when he was bankable.

I fell like they'd have to work really hard to mess up The Book Thief. The book has such visual writing.

Shakespeare in Love was the lighthearted film. The Academy, especially in recent years, loves the lighthearted film (King's Speech, The Artist, Argo). It was also the different film in a year with three WWII films (Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line (my personal favorite), and Life is Beautiful) and one other

I debate this one. Silence of the Lambs did an amazing job of building atmosphere. Set aside the pop culture memory/impact of Hannibal Lecter and just think about how Clariece is treated throughout the whole movie. Everyone leers at her. As a woman, I don't think I've had my skin crawl that much while still relating

The first thing I thought of when I saw this news was his enthusiasm on the line "Look, I ever circled some activities on your crazy cat calender!"

Oh, are we blaming Nolan for Heath Ledger's death now? I lost track of who got blamed somewhere between Ang Lee' s tendency to be distant with his actors, Michelle Williams for leaving him, and Jack Nicholson fake-warning him not to play the joker.

Lincoln was released by Dreamworks, the studio Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen founded. I imagine there is a particular branch of the Academy that doesn't like Disney or schmatzy films (for lack of a better word). This, Lincoln, and other recent similar films are very old fashion Hollywood studio

This is sure to be the film that my father can't believe didn't win the Oscar or the film I will think is nice but undeserving of the Oscars it gets.

The big one it was up against was Raging Bull. It's kind of a tough decision because, while Raging Bull is an amazingly made/acted film, it's also full of horrible people doing terrible things in a pretty graphic way that many Academy voters still probably weren't used to, or enjoyed, seeing in film. I fully

I'm going to say this one more time: I don't know how you have Rachel Wiesz in a "Wizard of Oz" movie and NOT make her the Wicked Witch of the West. She would have been amazing.

@avclub-efb3d8be0319721ef751da0b05d9f6a5:disqus Tarzan was an interesting experiment in the use of a Greek Chorus. Even though it doesn't work as well as it could I'm so glad Tarzan never sang. The part that's annoying about Hercules is that it pretended to try the Greek Chorus but didn't do it as well as Tarzan

I liked The Last Emperor well enough and it's epic scope is impressively handled. I debated adding it to that list but it beat out Broadcast News, Fatal Attraction, and Moonstruck, all of which I think have aged better than Last Emperor.

Thanks! How Green Was My Valley wasn't terrible but it was too long and should have easily lost to either Citizen Kane, Sergeant York, or The Maltese Falcon.

Sort of. I knew Steiger and Poitier would be excellent but expected it to be dated in social terms and race relations (sort of like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"). I was surprised by how modern it seemed and how much the story developed as an organic discussion of race and class.

I feel like MTM didn't even get a full chance in the film. You saw Hutton's point of view, you saw Sutherland's point of view, but because MTM's character refused to engage in the emotional discussion I felt like I didn't get any depth of character. Don't get me wrong, she played what she was given beautifully. I just
