A Tale of Two Cities is probably his most original novel. Great Expectations is my favorite Dickens novel just for honesty with his characters. David Copperfield is probably his best novel (imo). I pretty strongly disliked Oliver Twist, though.

I love Kavalier and Clay. I would read 100 pages in that book at a time and then just stop reading it for weeks just to process everything I read. It ended up taking much longer than I expected but it's still one of my favorite books.

Currently re-reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell because I convinced my book club to read it for November (and probably December). Still love the book as much as I did the first time and now I'll have people who can actually discuss it!

ugh, I'm normally not bothered by violence in books but Blood Meridian is now the line in the sand.

I loved The Terror and enjoyed Drood so I bought Carrion Comfort when my local Borders closed. I haven't gotten a chance to read it yet. Did you enjoy the book?

I look at Devil in the White City like this: Larson wrote the book he wanted to write in the architecture stuff…and then he had to write the serial killer stuff to get the book published for a mass audience. The time, attention, and interest is clearly one-sided throughout the book and the two stories don't…

I read Garden of Beasts when it first came out and I wasn't too impressed with it overall. It's going to be a movie at some point and I can just picture it as this revisionist American southern history professor lecturing Nazis about their behavior while his daughter tries to seduce the most powerful (but fun!)…

For me, the series was more "get through The Gunslinger and it gets awesome but STOP before Song of Susannah because it all goes downhill from there."

Fun fact: Nabokov supposedly based the book off of Charlie Chaplan's love life.
