Seems like the "checking the sheets" scenes came up every hundred pages or so in the books, for one reason or another (almost as often as royal feasts featuring eel and roasted swan). I praise the TV version for its restraint.

Bigger Kubrick bait-n-switch: The Shining. I was expecting this story about a haunted motel, but instead I got a thesis on genocide combined with a confession-in-puzzle-form of Kubrick's role in the moon-landing hoax. Oh, and minotaurs.
