@Lexicondevil - I vaguely recall reading somewhere that "punk" evolved from being a term for a crack in a wall or some such to being slang for female genitalia, and then to use as prostitute (non-gender specific until much later). I can't find any support for this online, though, and I don't exactly have a reference…
