It's the Raiders Effect. Everyone wants their blockbuster to be like Raiders of the Lost Ark (or even Empire Strikes Back), and thus they create a movie centered around a mcguffin that's basically an amusement park ride: one set piece after another. Sometimes, like in Raiders or Empire, it works pretty damn well
