I think it's possible to rescue for modern audiences. They did just that in Stratford, Ontario a few years ago with Graham Greene as Shylock and he was brilliant in it. I saw it twice, and both shows were sold out. (He was also Lenny in "Of Mice and Men" that year, another incredible performance.)
