But what about the chance that there were wild animals on the planet or something?  If an alien landed in my backyard and brought a gun with him, I sure would understand (just so he didnt' zap me with it)

Remember, this is a world with suspended animation.  Say Vickers was born when Weyland was 30, then spent half the next 70 years in cryo-sleep, it works out.  Of course, if that is what happened it was staggeringly lazy of the script to not say so.
