I've never paid for a single app, but I spend a lot of time on my smartphone.  But I do do a lot of this outside.  Mostly I read on my phone - news, books, magazines, AVC.  I actually don't get a headache while reading on the phone in a moving vehicle, but do when I'm reading an actual physical book.
