I liked the book a lot, and am mystified by all the negative comments here. (That said, I read it before seeing the movie, which makes a lot of changes. Perhaps if I'd read it after seeing the movie I'd feel differently.) I say: Give it a shot, esp. since you already own it. Just don't be put off by the framing story…

Perhaps this is addressed elsewhere in comments, but I don't see it.
