I like to think every day when the writers gathered together, they would look at each other with a glint of wild hope in their eyes and say "This is it, guys! This is the episode we kill off Shawn and complete the greek tragedy that is his life. This is when the show becomes REAL!"

That whole scene in the diner is a killer example of how to do exposition. You get all the information you need in a fairly straightforward manner, while making the scene interesting in its own right.
