It probably has to do with the lower respect Elton John has been accorded in the Great Rock Cannon. If I had to guess as to why that is, I'd guess it's because of the fact that his music is much more poppy and doesn't seem to evoke the edge that so much of the Cannon has. See also: Billy Joel.
