Well the Candidates are the corks. Going back to the bottle metaphor, the bottle is the island, the wine is Smokey trying to escape, and the cork is what's keeping him there. If Smocke can kill off all candidates or convince them to leave the island, then the cork is removed.

He's been trying to make '1906' happen for a while, but rumors are that the studio doesn't trust him with the price tag ($200 million). I wouldn't be surprised if he's putting that on the back burner so he can prove he can do live action with this.

When I heard it was called "The End" all I could think of is they don't want to go anywhere near spoiling us about anything. "The End" is the most obvious and secretive title they could come up with.
