I would argue that the strength of such also-rans stems from the originals. I would also imagine that most sequels keep the same people at the helm. As for fan-made games, based on original properties, have there been any great ones?

Making games is difficult

Earthbound sequel??
As a video game reviewer, you really should be more careful when throwing out such nerd candy. It took me two reads to understand you wanted a Transformers game, but set on Earth.
