Actually, isn't the bigger problem that they all know each other? I mean this is basically an industry convention that we all watch. Most cities I know are overwhelmingly democratic because they are overwhelmingly black. Again, New York is the exception of American cities, not the rule.

How about the cliche here that all cities are New York. If you are comparing the cultural landscape of NY, Chicago or (as some one mentioned earlier) New Orleans to a random suburb, then yeah, cities have a very strong argument… but really does suburban Philly have less than say city-limits Charlotte or Cleveland?
