Cormac McCarthy bums me the fuck out. Beautiful, beautiful prose, but there are some sections of The Road and of No Country for Old Men, as well as any random five pages of Blood Meridian, that are among the saddest and most haunting things I can recall reading.

You know what's even worse? The original plan was for Randy Quaid's character to destroy the aliens with a bomb strapped to his propeller-driven crop dusting plane. Independence Day sucked, but at least it didn't suck as hard as it might have.
