It was a great callback that developed on a past event to create the drama of Abed breaking character. It wasn't lazy, and it works perfectly well on its own without the context of VSA.

I don't know, but SONY TV are terrible. Sending out washed out versions of S2 episodes, sound mix lagging behind, it's like they want to kill Community.

Well, that was terrible, vaguely racist (this may be an unfortunate tic of Steve Thompson's writing), poorly paced, awfully directed, and full of plot holes. At least they had the decency to realise it was shite and wipe it from canon.
