i always thought that a signal was sent even if your phone was off and that, if you wanted to avoid being traced, removing the battery was necessary. of course movies and tv could have been lying to me.

i think everyone's willingness to jump to Dexter's defence is simply the result of years of donut (American spelling!) buying - hence the flashbacks. Doakes was a fitness freak who didn't eat donuts, so he wasn't swayed.
