I don't know if McNulty fits here because the show doesn't really have a main character. He was only prominent in season one because viewers required some sort of anchor while all the other players were introduced and I wouldn't call him the "lead".

The first hundred pages or so of Gravity's Rainbow are pretty hard to get through because it's very difficult to figure out what is going on. I'm not surprised many people give up early on and keep the impression the entire book is like that.
I remember an interview where the band said Justice was too mechanical with complex riffs that felt a bit like played by a machine or something. I like it though.

The scene where Walt calls the house to make his goodbyes of sorts and let Skyler off the hook was brilliantly written and acted.
