The idea of the photographer constantly inserting themselves into the action sounds super awkward because they aren't like… shooting themselves, right? I mean are they just a disembodied slightly-too-loud voice behind the camera? Doesn't that make it really hard to build a character or any connection to this person

"A wedding vow clumsily read from an iPhone—this was the plan back when the groom thought he was really getting married, mind you—includes a promise to make gluten-free nachos"

Wait, what? @avclub-9ff7c9eb9d37f434db778f59178012da:disqus , look up "gaff"s. Although at that point just ordinary women's underwear should do fine also.

    Azudarko: Yick, I'm sorry.

Do you think this could have something to do with how cinema gets funded in different countries?

I actually kinda feel like gaming has *better* representation of lgbt characters than movies or a couple other art forms, mostly because games are more like comics in that it's possible for a single person to make an entire video game by themselves. There's a lot of really cool work lately being done by vocally queer

Understandable, although I for one am pretty interested in movies about conflicted bisexuality

Washington: Trans films: To Die like a Man and Tomboy come to mind, and I think Better than Chocolate counts. (I haven't seen "Tomboy" but it sounded fantastic.) And I have questions about how Nathan Lane's character in The Birdcage would have identified if he'd been born forty years later.

There was less of that floating around back then, and also anime in general was a lot harder to get hold of. I found Ranma 1/2's concept fascinating but it didn't speak to me much. They don't really explore what Ranma's gender-swapping means. It seems to have no effect on Ranma at all, really. It's just a gag.

*Squints* just checking, is your avatar from "Breakfast on Pluto"?

Testing avatars. Please ignore this post

Looking back recently, I've realized that as a deeply closeted trans kid I wound up devouring a lot of anime, more or less just because I found it easiest to identify with non-human characters and anime was about the only place you could find a lot of strongly written non-human characters at that time. I couldn't find

"then burn your birth certificate at the same time"

Hm. The prince being kidnapped causing the war was explained, but it may have been explained in a single tossoff line or a conspicuous newspaper or something.

I absolutely love the book (I am a DWJ obsessive) but actually I was *very* happy with it as an adaptation. The elements pulled from the book were mostly either confusing (Howl's origin), or would have been ungainly without the length of the book to unpack the ideas. The only thing that makes me sad is that the ending

This one's been around awhile, hasn't it? A couple others on the same lines:

    "C"S! "C"S EVERYWHERE!

    "C"S! "C"S EVERYWHERE!

Oh man, a Silk Stalkings reference. I am feeling super nostalgic right now. I'm think going to go listen to Fret Blanket and pretend to care about Jenny McCarthy.
