After the Restoration in 1660, and the return of the theatre following the Puritan ban, women took the stage in England for the first time.  It was the age of famous actresses like Nell Gwynn.

As a lad raised in the Puritan era he was uneasy about his addiction to the stage.  He sets up an 'honesty box' for himself where he has to pay five shillings in forfeit every time he goes, then upbraids himself in the diary over how much this costs him.

Pepys, a habitual theatre-goer, had some fascinating - and often dubious - opinions on various plays.  He was in it for the chicks and the dancing, and didn't have much time for Shakespeare:
