Jailers have been doing this on TV and in Movies forever, and it's always unsatisfying for the audience. Be patient, you know?  Assess the situation.  Ask yourself what's to be gained by charging in there.  Call for reinforcments.  If the guy dies, so what?  Will the guard get fired from the army or something?
