But she genuinely seemed crushed to realize that she didn't have a relationship with the guy.  That's the insidiousness of addiction.  Her lack of a conscience - making the chef dive into the water, mind raping her friend - etcetera - is the kind of thing most people would not do unless they were not conscious of it.

I couldn't agree more!  To say Seinfeld was a show about nothing is to say that they didn't get there first.  There was no "situation" in the comedy of Roseanne; no adopted alien/minority, no genie in a bottle on the bookshelf, no crazy marriage of disparately different classes, it was a very believable, convincing -
