"Rome" took the easy road I always thought. A story of ancient Rome and the rise and fall of Caesar told from the common man's point of view  - just focusing on Pullo and Vorenus and their families - would have been great, and they had the cast to pull it off.  Adding all the "celebs" - Caesar, Cicero, Octavian, etc.…
