Yeah, Appa was their house, pet and getaway vehicle, so he had much more plot use. Now that everyone will live on Air Temple Island, I imagine we'll see Naga more and maybe her animal personality will shine through more as well.

I think we'll definitely see some earthbending used to incapacitate the mechas, but I totally buy it not being used well for that yet. The metalbender police seem to favor metal bending over other types of earthbending the way Korra seems to favor fire over all the other elements, and it takes some time to overcome…

That was my first thought too, but the Yakone episode happened too early for it to be directly related to the death of Asami's mother and Malin's parents. There probably still is a connection, though.
