I fail to see the problem there… they could easily make this same "stuff blowing up real good" sci-fi movie without the Trek name attached and leave Trek for the small screen. I'm dreading the day when we find out this New Trek is the direction the next series will take.

As a die-hard Trek fan, these new movies really hit the wrong note for me. For one thing, every movie plot since Nemesis is about a bad guy getting revenge on whoever. We get it, Khan was the "best" Star Trek movie. That doesn't mean you have to give up in trying to find new stories. And between this and the Iron Man

And why wouldn't we?… what exactly elevates it above that level? It certainly doesn't  implement stronger logic. The action is as clunky or worse from what you'd see in Time Cop. Looper is a C level script given A level treatment. Cast Ashton Kutcher in the JGL role and see how fast the fans of it label it mediocre.

I guess I didn't really connect with them. The only character that was remotely sympathetic was Emily Blunt, and even then she only got there by reciting a long monologue about her backstory. Everyone else was a huge dick, kid included.

So very accurate, I'm afraid. A dumb, average movie.

Rape? I know this AV Club and -everything's- racist and misogynistic, but c'mon.

I'll agree with this one. It certainly wasn't bad, but it wasn't the second coming. Like most Bond movies, it just sort of happened and then you move on.

If asking "philosophical questions" excused bad plotting and storytelling then the Matrix sequels would have received glowing reviews. This wasn't a "deep" movie — it was a poorly constructed exercise in Sci-Fi tropes and shoehorned action.

Lord Andre, I'll agree with you that the scene where Old Seth starts coming apart is a great scene when set apart from any kind of logical context. I was appropriately grossed out and amused, while at the same time holding my left-brain at bay while it screamed out "BULL-SHIT!"

Well, how can I argue with that?

Inception for one.
