pretty sure you're talking about the fear park trilogy. that revolved around an amusement park, but i think the main villian at the end was killed by zombie gas or something. what you say sounds familiar, but i'm pretty sure most of the deaths were from carnival accidents.

Magical realism is magical!  And a pretty well established storytelling device.
