Everyone could hear Brian. He even had a few girlfriends (Drew Barrymore played one of them). But also Lois' Father's dog (the one Brian knocked up) couldn't talk.

If the series went on longer, Inara would have been the one to die. She was
dying from some mystery illness they never got around to mentioning.

She dies in the comic books, if that is any consolation.

He was supposed to die at the end of season 1.
