I haven't seen the Fright Night remake, but it really comes down to just one question: How's the new Evil Ed?

Falied thirteenthsies!
@avclub-745406fb5adbbaf4904806ea9f76f858:disqus : I'd call it arrogance, specifically, rather than just dickishness (though obviously there's an overlap there). His arrogance explains (among other things) his condescending dismissal of Radagast, & his belief that he could successfully wield the palantir.

You even included the macron on the ablative ending, @avclub-a9365bd906e11324065c35be476beb0c:disqus !

I just kept saying, "PUT ON THE RING!" over & over again for most of that little episode. But maybe it was important for Thorin to SEE Bilbo & thus to know who was helping him?

I knew going in that the movie was 2 hours & 50-some minutes. Makes it easier to expect the end.

I have to admit I wasn't really listening for LotR music cues, but the only one I noticed was when Bilbo picked up the Ring. Overall, I thought he movie was just about perfect—evocative but mostly in the background, not hitting you over the head.

I thought the point of Radagast was to provide an eye witness to the Necromancer. The rabbit-sled chase distraction was arguably pointless, though it served to buy Thorin's company some time. Anyways, he's not on screen for very long, so even if pointless his scenes don't really mar the film.

I didn't feel like it was padded out at all—I wanted it to be longer!

This was my first 3D experience, & the theater I went to only had the 3D in HFR (not even sure if theaters are offering 3D with 24 FPS), so I have nothing to compare it to, but overall I liked it.
