When friends were raving about the play during the 90's, I thought "Yeah, whatever." Fast forward to 2005, and the wife and I are watching the movie adaptation on pay-per-view - we gave in to the hype a little too late. At the end of the movie there was consensus on several points:

The issue I have (indirectly) with Ms. Winehouse is that because there is so much focus on her tragedies and shortcomings, people tend to ignore things of actual importance.
